Awal Muharram

Awal Muharram is a national public holiday in Malaysia. It marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar year.

Awal Muharram, also known as Maal Hijrah, is the celebration of the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The new year is celebrated by Muslims all over the world.
The Islamic calendar started with the first year in 622 AD when the prophet Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra.
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and consist of 354 days, hence the Awal Muharram shifts forward 11 to 12 days every year.
