MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)

The modern and efficient Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is probably the fastest way to get around Singapore. It consists of 4 lines with 3 more lines in the making or planning.

Lines:

North South Line (NS)
opened in 1987, 26 stations, 45km (Jurong East - Marina Bay)
operator: SMRT

East West Line (EW)
opened in 1987, 35 stations,57km (Changi Airport - Tanah Merah)
operator: SMRT

Nort East Line (NE)
opened in 2003, 16 stations, 20km (Harbour Front - Punggol)
operator: SBS Transit

Circle Line (CC)
opened in 2009, 30 stations, 36km
operator: SMRT

opening in 2013:
stage 1 of Downtown Line

from 5.30am until midnight - 1am (depending on the station)

Planing your journey, Fares & Ticketing
You can check  the train fare calculator on the SMRT website to get prices (click on the the stations on the map to make a selection of your journey).

Tickets can be bought at  ticketing machins at the station and from ticket offices.

For people living in Singapore are staying longer, the EZ-link card or NETS Flashpay card is handy as it stores value on it can be used for MRT and buses with 15% discount. The cards costs S$15 with a S$7 value preloaded on it (top-ups will be in increments of S$10 after that).
EZ-Link also offers a Singapore Tourist Pass for a price of S$10 per day for unlimited train and bus rides (2-Day-Pass: $16, 3-Day-Pass: $20). There is an aditional S$10 dollar deposit on the card which can be redeem within 5 days of expiration.
The Tourist Pass can be bought at the ticket offices of theses stations: Changi Airport, Orchard, Chinatown, City Hall, Raffles Places, Ang Mo Kio, HarbourFront, Bugis.
