Cherating

Cherating is the only real backpacker hub at the east coast of the peninsula on the mainland. Offering plenty of affordable chalets and a relaxed atmosphere, it is good place to stop for a night or two on the way up or down the east coast. The beach itself is not that spectacular and misses the palm directly at the beach. But it has a good vibe and few things you can do like taking a tour or renting a kayak up the river into the mangroves. There is also an active surfer scene when the waves are right. Cherating is located about 30km or 1h by local bus north of Kuantan.

Melaka

Melaka (a.k.a. Malacca) is the capital of the Malaysian state of Malacca.
Traditionally, the spot where Melaka stands today was the center of Malaccan history. It was the capital of the Malaccan Sultanate and the center of the Malay world in the 15th and the 16th century before it fell to the Portuguese in 1511. Centuries of colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British have shaped the architecture of the town.

I had scheduled a swim lesson.  Paid my money.  Stepped out from the locker room in my Speedo swim trunks and immediately got a “you’re not swimming in those!” from the “lifeguard”.  Why? Seems they got a rule about swimwear, i.e. marble bags for men and nothing more decent is acceptable.  Why?  Because you can wear trunks out on the streets.  What’s wrong with that?  Didn’t get any reasonable answers except hostility from a couple of members standing nearby, wearing marble bags. From the hostility I received, I think the rule about marble bags is just to keep out foreigners because most expats & tourists wear trunks and locals wear marble bags (they’re cheaper).  Also, they swim width-wise and not length-wise i.e. you’re not allowed to swim 50m in a 50 metre pool!
